Albany Bulb

These photographs are just a few I have taken over the last ten years at The Albany Bulb, also known as the Landfill, the Waterfront and just The Bulb. It is a place I feel passionate about. That much is obvious. There are many of us who believe that this piece of the much hyped Eastshore State Park should have been left untouched and unmanaged - because it is a unique example of what happens when a place naturally and organically self regulates. But the dogma of 'preservation' and 'conservation areas' 'resource protection', 'habitats' and 'liability' overrules all individual identity. They cannot leave anything untouched, un-designed. It is as if if they (the park planners) didn't make it, it has no value. Rules, guidelines, regulations, interpretive signage, fences, safety, sanctioned art - it leaves nothing to the imagination. That is what the landfill meant to us - a place of unlimited imagination.

Thanks for this. SOS pointed me to your comments. I haven't seen the program, but I too was in the middle of those conflicts and suffered the vile attacks of the anti-sex brigade. You've written so eloquently about some of the stuff that was really wrong with Jeffreys and her ilk. I am not surprised that the BBC picked Jeffreys to highlight - after all, she is a perfect anti-sex "feminist" voice, doing the good work of the mainstream for them. No wonder she continues to find open doors in the media and the academy - doors closed to those of us who are honest about alternative sexualities. Thanks for being such an honest and powerful voice.

I'm very curious about the program and how it will depict everything. Who's directing it? Is someone going to release a DVD or will you get a pirate copy? What happened to Jeffreys in the end, is she still alive? Still unrepenant?

I have a funny story for you.... I knew Sheila's husband, or her ex, I guess, in the mid 70s. A very nice chap to me!

He was in the same socialist group I was in, in the US, and he was visiting, with his toddler in tow. I had no idea where his wife was, or who she was.

We were very involved in rank and file revolution in the Teamsters at the time, and Penthouse, of all magazines, wrote an article about our militant reform efforts.

We had a giggle by taking photos of Steve reading Penthouse intently with his glasses on, while his daughter dozed off in his lap.

I had NO IDEA that Penthouse would have been a contentious brick in his family. For us, at the time, it was nothing to be taken seriously, just witless masturbation material. The "joke" was that Steve such an intellectual, and a father, posed with "naughty boy" 'zine.

Sue Katz has a nerve complaining about 'vile attacks' on anyone. She was extremely abusive to her staff at one project she ran in the UK, to the point of where several of the women would go home crying after Katz's cruel, manipulative management style. I worked there for less than three months before I left in a real state. She bullied me because I was too confident and knowledgable, and played horrible power games. We all hated her.

Heeeey, what's your real problem here? That you weren't featured enough in the programme? I didn't like Sheila Jeffreys much either. I thought she was arrogant and self-serving, but - unlike you seem to have done - I didn't give her the power to dictate my emotions either then or now.

I was featured in that programme, but haven't seen it yet (in the belief that one should take issues and our work seriously and ourselves not at all, it hasn't been a priority for me). Frankly, the whole thing was a bit of a laugh. It was about events of around 20 years ago, after all! I remember that we (feminists) have always been accused of being humourless. Jill, get over yourself and lighten up. If you want something to be angry about, try doing something pratical about violence against women today.
